Tobacco Dependence Disease

Inability to quit smoking has been relabeled as Tobacco Dependence Disease.

Nicotine addiction (tobacco dependence) involves physical and psychological factors that make it difficult to quit using tobacco, even when the motivation and desire are there.

Nicotine releases a chemical known as dopamine in the same regions of the brain as other addictive drugs. These pleasure receptors are what have people coming back time after time even when they are aware of the health dangers.

There are numerous treatments available that help people stop smoking. These include medications approved by the FDA and behavioral therapies.

The FDA has approved various medications for treating nicotine addiction. These include patches, gum, and the medications varenicline and bupropion.

Studies have shown that people who receive a combination of medications and behavioral treatment are more likely to stop smoking than those who receive only minimal intervention. These types of interventions can be used in combination with other measures to help people stop smoking. Besides being able to provide a personalized approach, it is also important to note that people who smoke may have different reasons for quitting.

The Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking Cessation, released in January 2020, offers evidence that smoking cessation is beneficial at any age, improves health status and enhances quality of life. It also reduces the risk of premature death and can add as much as a decade to life expectancy.
