Seasonal Allergies Are at an All-Time High

AAAAACHO!!!! Uhhhhhh

We are hearing it daily from our patients, friends, and co-workers. The itchy allergy eyes, watering, sneezing, sometimes even scratchy throats, and blurry vision. It seems to be exaggerated this year and affecting more people than ever.

While some people have yearly seasonal allergies and have come to expect some annoyance and reaction this time of year, others who have never had an issue before are noticing symptoms.

No matter where you live tree pollen is high on the list for March as are grasses and ragweed. Keep an eye on the pollen count. The higher the level the more likely you are to react.

Along with that air pollution is on the rise and it can affect you as well. While you can’t stop breathing or hide entirely there are some things you can do to mitigate the effects. We hate to see anyone suffer with this, so let’s go over a few helpful ideas.

  1. Shower after being outdoors – To help remove pollen you pick up outside, take a shower and change your clothes.
  2. Check the weather – Learn when conditions such as the wind increase pollen levels, so you can prepare and make sure you have antihistamines or other allergy medications with you.
  3. Keep indoor pollen to a minimum – Keep your windows shut and use your AC or a HEPA purifier to filter allergens.
  4. Find your allergy relief options – From medications to nasal sprays, talk to your doctor about your options.
  5. Heavy Rains – can sometimes stir up dust mites and molds – so stay indoors till things dry out if you are allergic to either.
  6. Right now, the top allergens affecting Southwest Florida include: Timothy, Bermuda, Bahia, Johnson, Red Top, and Blue Grasses
